Week 2

Observing communication in Action

The show that I watched was parenthood. The show started with a little girl that seems doing laundry by putting her clothes away in a basket. She looks sad despite she was dancing because her facial expressions could tell that she was suffering from a problem. After that, she drove her car heading to the beach where she got a phone call from a woman that I guessed was her mother. They continued talking and both of them look uncomfortable just as if they are blaming each other. In fact, the show that I watched has many characters that every one of them seemed uncomfortable, frown and upset due to their facial expressions that gave us a clear picture of their tensions about something that was going on.

By watchingthe show a second time with the sound on, I found that I was not completely right about my assumptions towards some characters. I was correct about some of them and wrong about other characters based on their facial expressions that sometimes do not give us a full picture of what we think.

The assignment of this week has taught me that nonverbal communication is not always correct and may convey different message depending on how we interpreted the action or the message we received.

  1. Bushra, I agree with you when you say that nonverbal communication may convey different message depending on how we interpret the action or the message we received. I had a tough time trying to figure out the relationships with the television show that I watched with the sound off. I had later discovered after turning the sound on that the two people who I thought were nothing more than just teachers who worked together were more than that. They were actually in a relationship.

  2. Bushra,

This is what people deal with everyday. Non verbal communication can be tricky so we have to be careful not to jump to conclusions. Many messages can come from nonverbal communication depending on who is the interpretor. Nice post,

  3. Bursha, this was a good show and I remembered it growing up as a child. I did a reality tv show which was pretty simple to tell what was going on with the verbal and nonverbal communication. This show I think you could tell what was going on without hearing them talk. I enjoyed reading your post and I think you did a good job.

  4. That is correct and we as early educators have to watch and be careful about our expressions because parents may just misinterpret what is going on in how we are expressing ourselves.
